At Parkside Academy, our geography curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We aim to help children understand the relationships between places, environments, and communities, both locally and globally.

We aim for our pupils to:

  • Develop a strong understanding of vocabulary linked to location, place, and human and physical geography.
  • Connect prior learning with new knowledge to deepen their understanding of the world around them.
  • Make links across countries and continents, recognising similarities, differences, and global connections.
  • Understand the natural formation of the Earth and how physical features such as mountains, rivers, and volcanoes are formed.
  • Develop their geographical analysis skills by selecting, organising, and interpreting information to answer questions and respond to real-world challenges.

Through map work, fieldwork, enquiry, and exploration, we encourage pupils to become inquisitive geographers who care about the planet and understand their role in protecting its future.

We use ‘CUSP’ to enhance our Geography curriculum as it best supports the opportunities we want to give our children, which are:

  • Explore local, national and global scales of activity
  • Participate in residential visits
  • Compare the similarities and differences of the local area with those of a location in the wider world.
  • Develop field study and Geographical enquiry skills
  • Interpret a range of sources of geographical information including maps, globes and aerial photographs

Geography at Parkside takes advantage of the wonderful surroundings Cumbria has to offer with many classes going on school trips to visit some of these.

These visits include:

Numerous local visits to our Park

Grizedale forest and Abbots wood

Gummers How

Castle Head

The Hoad
