Physical Education

Physical Education at Parkside Academy
At Parkside Academy, we believe Physical Education is a vital part of every child’s development. Our PE curriculum nurtures positive attitudes towards fitness, wellbeing, and healthy lifestyles, while supporting learning across the wider curriculum. It integrates health, wellbeing, and physical literacy, including understanding of nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and self-care, ensuring children develop the knowledge and skills to thrive both in and out of school. Through engaging and progressive physical activity, we equip children with skills that extend far beyond school. Our provision offers inclusive opportunities for children of all abilities and backgrounds, and encourages every child to take pride in representing the school in sporting activities.

Weekly PE and Specialist Coaching
We aim to give our children more than the minimum requirement of two hours of PE per week:

  • 2-hour weekly PE lesson
  • 30 minutes of weekly swimming
  • Specialist coaching from local experts to enhance provision, including boxing instructors, county cricket coaches, dance and yoga practitioners

This approach ensures children receive a broad, varied, and high-quality PE experience. We also have strong partnerships with local clubs, providing opportunities for children to participate in football, rugby, gymnastics, dance, and boxing, including many representing clubs outside school.

Swimming
Swimming is a key strength of our provision.

  • All pupils from Reception to Year 6 train all year round, making steady progress in water confidence, stroke technique, and stamina.
  • Our staff work alongside qualified Swim England coaches to deliver instruction in water safety, stroke development, and advanced skills.
  • Pupils have the opportunity to compete annually in the National Swimming Championships, showcasing their achievements.

School Games and Competitive Sport
School sport is an important part of life at Parkside Academy. It helps children develop:

  • Teamwork
  • Resilience
  • Determination
  • Pride in representing their school

We are active members of the Furness Schools Sport Partnership, participating in festivals and competitions monthly. Many of our teams have recently progressed to county finals, highlighting both talent and dedication.

We also offer:

  • Year-round sports clubs led by teachers, some with additional sporting qualifications
  • A commitment to provide every child the opportunity to represent the school in a festival, fixture, or competitive event

By taking part, children gain confidence, inclusion, and memorable experiences.

Our Commitment
At Parkside Academy, we strive to inspire every child to be active, resilient, and enthusiastic participants in sport—both now and in the future.
